Care is part of the story
Remove your ring for harsh chemicals, heavy lifting, and activities where it may catch or be knocked. Store it separately when you are not wearing it, and let a professional inspect the setting periodically.
Build a habit around taking your ring off
Choose a secure storage place away from sinks before you begin tasks involving impact or chemicals. Removing jewellery only after your hands are wet makes it easier to lose a ring. At home, a closed jewellery box is safer than leaving it loose on a counter.
When travelling, use an individual compartment or soft pouch and keep the ring from rubbing against other pieces. Avoid wrapping it in tissue, which can be mistaken for rubbish.

Separate cleaning from inspection
Cleaning removes residue, while inspection looks for changes in the setting. A ring can be bright but have a worn claw. Check for snagging, a changed outline or visible movement without pushing or probing the stone yourself.
If something seems different, stop wearing the piece and arrange an assessment before cleaning. A brush or running water could dislodge a stone that is already loose.
Know which guide applies to your piece
The home-cleaning guide is intended for a sound diamond ring in a suitable precious-metal setting. Antique pieces, glued components, delicate finishes and jewellery containing other gemstones may need a different method.
When you are unsure about a material or treatment, ask the maker first. Keeping a note of the piece’s materials makes future cleaning and servicing decisions much simpler.
Your checklist
- Store the ring securely before hands-on tasks.
- Keep jewellery separated in storage.
- Look for changes before cleaning.
- Ask for piece-specific advice when materials are uncertain.
Common questions
How often should I arrange a professional check?
Ask your jeweller for an interval appropriate to the design and wear. Arrange an earlier check after an impact, snag or any sign of movement.
Can I use the same method for every piece?
No. Gemstones, treatments, adhesives and finishes can require different care. Confirm the materials before using a cleaning method.
