Wedding Ring Guide
The wedding band is a daily piece, so comfort matters as much as proportion. Start by thinking about how the band will sit beside your engagement ring and how it will feel on its own.

Width and profile
A slim band creates a delicate stack, while a wider band gives stronger contrast. Flat, court, and softly rounded profiles each change the feel against the finger.
Metal and finish
Matching metals create continuity. A brushed, hammered, or milgrain finish can introduce texture without competing with the engagement ring.
Comfort and fit
Try the two rings together. Check for movement, pressure, and any gap you would rather embrace or minimise. A comfort-fit interior can make a meaningful difference.
Plain, diamond-set or shaped
A plain band puts the focus on metal colour and silhouette. A diamond-set band adds texture and sparkle, while a curved or notched band can accommodate the head of an engagement ring. The best choice depends on how you plan to wear it.
For diamond bands, compare how far the stones extend around the finger. A half-set design leaves plain metal underneath; a full eternity design carries stones around the entire circumference. That difference affects feel, maintenance and often the scope for resizing.

Choose width with your hand in motion
Try making a fist, holding a pen and letting your fingers rest together. A broad band may look balanced but feel different at the neighbouring fingers. A very narrow band may feel light while giving less visual presence than you expected.
Interior shape matters too. A rounded interior and a flatter interior do not feel identical even at the same stated size. Use a sizing sample that resembles the final band rather than assuming one measurement suits every style.
Understand the finish and metal
A high polish reflects clearly and makes small marks easy to see. A brushed finish diffuses reflections but can develop shiny areas through rubbing. Neither finish stays exactly as delivered without maintenance.
Confirm metal purity and available alloys with the jeweller. Matching colour is only part of pairing: the profile and contact points determine whether rings rub in a way that could wear a setting. Have the whole stack assessed if either band carries exposed stone edges.
Personal details and future changes
An engraving can be a date, initials or a short phrase. Check the spelling, available space and lettering before approving it. A narrow band may accommodate less than a wide one, and later resizing can affect an inscription.
Think ahead about whether the ring might need size adjustment. Ask what alterations the particular construction permits and whether decorative patterns can be preserved. Keep the specification and purchase documents so future repairs can be discussed accurately.
At a glance
| Band style | Consider it for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Plain metal | A simple standalone ring or a quiet pairing | Surface finishes change with wear |
| Partly diamond-set | Sparkle across the visible top of the band | Small settings need inspection |
| Full eternity | Diamonds around the entire circumference | Sizing alterations can be restricted |
| Contoured | Accommodating a low engagement-ring basket | Check the fit against the actual ring |
Your checklist
- Decide between plain, partial diamond-set and eternity styles.
- Check comfort while moving your hand.
- Confirm interior profile and exact size.
- Proofread engraving before approval.
- Ask about future resizing and refinishing.
Common questions
Is an eternity band easy to resize?
A full circle of stones often limits resizing and may require substantial work. Confirm the specific design’s options before ordering.
Will a brushed finish stay matte forever?
No. Contact and wear can change the surface. Ask whether and how the finish can be restored.
Can I wear just my wedding band?
Of course. If that is likely to be your routine, give its standalone comfort and appearance equal weight when choosing.
